Behind-the-Scenes
At Slow Botanicals

Slow Botanicals is remarkably different (natural) skin care.

Making skin care products the way I do takes more time, and loads of experience and knowledge.

harvesting wild yarrow slow botanicals

First, I go into the wild and spend hour upon hour harvesting botanicals.

Each botanical, including mushrooms, has different processing needs:  Chopped, torn, clipped, left alone, dried, or used fresh

Next, I infuse organic extra virgin olive oil with the botanicals I've meticulously prepared.
After weeks, or even months, of steeping in the oil, I strain out the medicinal botanicals.

The following step, in the case of soap making is brewing a strong, concentrated tea, with the same botanicals.

This preparation takes days, weeks or months!
Each step is uniquely tailored to every individual skin care product.

Consulting my royal blue notebook of the recipes I've created and perfected over the years, I weigh out ingredients.

Carefully I mix and blend and pour, creating one small batch of soap or skin cream at at time.

Pressing lilacs for Slow Botanicals Spring Lilac Soap

I draw images in the surfaces or carefully place dried flowers, some of them pressed months ago, onto the surface of every bar.

This makes the soap beautiful.

I do it all by hand. One at a time.
Making each bar 1-of-a-kind.

Finishing Touces

When soap bars are finished hardening, around 24 hours after pouring,

I unmold each bar and use my special knife to cut away the edges.
This eliminates sharp edges that are uncomfortable to the touch.

But it's not
ready yet!

Next I transfer the soap to metal racks where they cure.
The soap cures for 4-6 weeks, before it's safely used for bathing.

Through curing, excess moisture evaporates from the soap & the bars whiten in color.

The ph changes, and with time, soap becomes more & more gentle.

Handmade Skin Cream is created differently.

Blending organic beeswax with botanically infused organic olive oil,
I fill glass jars one at a time.

Once freshly poured skin cream cools to room temperature, it's ready to be used - Unlike soap, there's no curing necessary!

This cream has a very long shelf life.

The same ingredients included to heal your skin, make this skin cream stable and safe from contaminants.

Why do I write labels by hand?

Because you've told me you never want me to change this - I'll write out your labels by hand for as long as I can.

You've told me it's a luxury. You've let me know it makes you feel seen. You love the reminder of the 1-of-a-kind nature of handmade botanical skin cream.

After all the individual care put into each step of making Slow Botanicals, it only makes sense to  apply this level of detail even to labels!
